Missed the referral code at sign-up? The rules on every exchange

If you signed up without a referral code, the exchange decides whether it can still be added. Bybit allows adding an affiliate code for a limited time after sign-up; for the other exchanges we cover we have not confirmed such an option, so ask support before trading. Do not open a second account to get new-user offers.

Forgetting the referral code is one of the most common sign-up mistakes. The app opens without the code, the field is folded under "optional", or you registered long before you knew rebates existed. What you can do about it depends entirely on the exchange's own rules, and they differ more than most people expect.

Why the code matters at sign-up

Partner programmes link a new account to a partner at the moment of registration: through the link you arrived by, or through the code typed into the sign-up form. The rebate for new accounts, and often the welcome offer, follow from that link. Changing it later is the exception rather than the rule, because exchanges do not want partners to claim users who are already theirs.

That is also why the fix is time-sensitive. Where an exchange allows adding the code afterwards, it does so for a limited window after registration, and trades made before the code was attached are usually not covered.

Exchange by exchange

The table shows how long after sign-up each exchange lets you add a code. A value appears once we have confirmed the rule on the exchange's own pages; "to be confirmed" means we have not found an official option to add the code later — not that one certainly does not exist.

Each exchange page has a "Forgot to enter the code?" block with that exchange's current rule and a link to its official help.

There are two ways to attach a partner to a new account. A referral link carries the code in the web address, and the sign-up form fills it in for you. A referral code is typed into the form by hand. The link is more convenient, and it is also where most mistakes happen:

  • the link is opened in one browser, but the account is created in another, or in the app;
  • a privacy extension or an in-app browser strips the part of the address that carries the code;
  • only the exchange's domain is copied from the link, without the rest of the address;
  • the sign-up page is reloaded or left and reopened later from a search result.

In each of these cases the form may look normal, just with an empty code field. That is why the last check before pressing "Sign up" is the code field itself, not the link you arrived by.

How to add the code on Bybit

Bybit lets you add an affiliate code for 14 days after registration. According to Bybit's help centre, it works for the main account only, not for sub-accounts, and it applies to affiliate (partner) codes, not to codes from the friend-referral programme.

  1. Log in to your main Bybit account.
  2. Open Bybit's help-centre guide on adding and checking a registered affiliate code and follow the current steps there — menu paths change from time to time.
  3. Enter the code exactly as given and confirm.
  4. Check that the code now shows as registered on your account.

If the window has passed or there is no such option

  • Ask support a concrete question: "Can the referral code … still be attached to my account with UID …?" If the answer is no, accept it; there is no workaround the exchange will honour.
  • Compare the account as it is. Without the new-account rebate, the base fees, VIP tiers and token discounts still apply. For many traders the difference is smaller than it first seems; the guide on calculating trading fee savings helps to put a number on it.
  • Do not open a second account. Most exchanges allow one verified account per person, and their terms often prohibit duplicate accounts made to collect new-user offers. A duplicate can be restricted and its rewards cancelled, and you may be asked to explain it during a later verification.

If you registered only minutes ago, have not verified your identity and have not deposited anything, ask support whether you may close the account and register again with the code. Do not do it without their answer.

How not to forget next time

  1. Open the exchange through the partner link in the same browser where you will register, and finish sign-up in that session.
  2. Before submitting the form, check that the referral code field is filled in; expand it if it is folded under "optional".
  3. If you sign up in the mobile app, a link may not carry the code into the app: type it in by hand.
  4. Save a screenshot of the completed form. If a question comes up later, it shows what you entered and when.

Common situations

Registered in the app and the code did not carry over. This is the most frequent case: the link opens the website, but sign-up happens in the app, which never received the code. Check the exchange's rule in the table above and, if the window is still open, add the code as soon as possible.

Typed the code with a mistake. Some exchanges treat codes as case-sensitive. Look in the account's referral settings to see which code is actually attached, and ask support whether it can be corrected.

An old account, and you only now learned about rebates. New-user offers are almost certainly not available for it. It is more useful to compare its current fees with the alternatives than to look for a way to re-register it.

What this means for Getref Rewards

Getref Rewards tasks count accounts that the exchange shows as registered through the Getref link; you submit your UID and we check it against the exchange's partner data. An account registered without our link usually cannot complete the task, even if the rest is in order. The conditions of each task are on the tasks page, and the difference between the exchange's rebate and Getref's points is explained in what a fee rebate is.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a referral code after registering?

On some exchanges, for a limited time. Bybit allows it for affiliate codes on the main account; for the others, check the exchange page on Getref or ask support.

Will a code added later cover my earlier trades?

Do not count on it. Rebates normally apply from the moment the code is attached; only the exchange can say otherwise.

Can I just open a second account with the code?

Most exchanges allow one verified account per person and prohibit duplicates made for new-user offers. A duplicate can be restricted and its rewards cancelled.
